What Can Somatic Experiencing Help With?

Somatic Experiencing is a therapeutic approach that aims to address and heal the effects of stress and trauma stored in the body by focusing on bodily sensations, emotions, and behaviours. Somatic Experiencing can help individuals release pent-up stress and tension, reduce burnout, anxiety and depression symptoms, manage chronic pain, improve self-regulation, and enhance overall well-being.

Somatic Experiencing is a therapeutic approach that can be beneficial for individuals struggling with stress related symptoms, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex-PTSD (CPTSD). Focusing on the body's physical sensations and responses to trauma, Somatic Experiencing aims to help individuals release pent-up energy from the stress and traumatic event and re-regulate their nervous system.

Through gentle guidance and attention to bodily sensations, Somatic Experiencing sessions can assist individuals in gradually processing and integrating the traumatic memories stored in the body. This approach reduces the intensity of PTSD symptoms such as hypervigilance, flashbacks, stress, and anxiety.

Promoting a sense of safety and empowerment, Somatic Experiencing allows individuals to explore their trauma at their own pace, fostering a deeper connection between mind and body. This can lead to increased resilience, emotional regulation, and a greater sense of well-being.

Safely process traumatic experiences and develop a greater sense of resilience and empowerment.

How Does Somatic Experiencing Work?

Somatic Experiencing therapy works on the impulses experienced as sensations in the body, that are stuck from the time of the stressful experience. The sensations, like tightness, continue to live within the body and are designed to protect the self. By bringing attention to the sensations in the body and the experience of the mind, like anger, we follow the natural intuition for action which was previously suppressed.

Completing the action brings closure to the previously stuck impulses and addresses the root cause of stress trauma symptoms.

I gently guide the client to become sensitive to the sensations in the body and the associated suppressed emotions. As the therapist I work with the client in a way that difficult experiences become tolerable. After the sensations are worked through the nervous system, it brings calmness and openness for connection to the self in the body and mind, and to others.

The event is not what caused the stress or trauma, it is the overwhelming response to the perceived life threat that caused an unbalanced nervous system which is the stress and trauma symptoms that we experience. The aim is to help you access the body memory of the event, not necessarily the story to resolve the trauma. We do not have to discuss what happened if you don’t want to.

About me

An experienced Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner (SEP). My interest in psychotherapy was ignited by my own childhood trauma history. I met Dr Gabor Maté when participating in a retreat which took me deep into my healing.

I received feedback from psychologists working in the trauma healing field, including from a senior member in Gabor Maté’s team about my potential as a therapist because of my healing journey which encouraged me to become a therapist. I then started to learn Somatic Experiencing ® (SE) which I completed in 2019, when I started to work in the field, after the three year training with Dr Peter Levine’s institute. This included supervisory hours, some of which I had with Dr Peter Levine himself. I received additional training from Dr Peter Levine for clients who participated or were impacted by war like refugees.

My recovery process helped me maintain good physical and mental health, be more productive, joyful, and eventually become a trauma therapist to help others on their journey. Having been through the recovery process I am passionate about what I do. I guide my clients in their healing by working compassionately with their central nervous system, where the trauma is held. My aim for my client is to resolve the trauma, to bring calm, and meet life’s challenges.

Most of my clients are health professionals such as accredited psychologists, GPs, physiotherapists, and nurses, amongst others.

You can find me registered on the SE Trauma Institute SE Practitioner Directory.
